Benefits of Kiln Dried Firewood
- Lower moisture content than seasoned firewood
- Burns hotter and longer
- Lights easier
- Kills bugs, funguses and prevents mold so it can be stored indoors without concern
- Produces less smoke when burning which helps reduce creosote buildup and chimney fires
- Transportable
- Lighter weight and easier to carry
- Cleaner
- Better value per pound because less energy is needed to burn off moisture.
Differences Between Kiln Dried Firewood, Seasoned Firewood and Heat Treated Wood
Seasoned firewood is great as long as it has been seasoned long enough. However, kiln dried wood will still burn hotter and longer because it is dried consistently throughout the entire batch and not resting on the ground soaking up moisture. Seasoned firewood can get as low as 20% moisture but it will likely not be every piece and it can take 1-2 years to achieve that depending on the species. Seasoned wood is less expensive but since it has higher moisture than kiln dried wood it consumes more energy (more pieces of wood) to achieve the same heat and duration.
Kiln dried wood is consistently dried down to moisture levels between 10-20% requiring less energy to burn and ignite. It will be free of insects, fungus and mold which makes it cleaner and safer to store inside if desired. It produces less smoke and emissions which reduces creosote buildup and potential chimney fires. If you are cooking with wood, kiln dried firewood will not leave the dirty or burnt smoke flavor in your food as seasoned wood sometimes can depending on the moisture content.
Heat treated wood does go into a kiln but only needs to reach an internal temp of 140 degrees Fahrenheit for 60 minutes and will not get as dry as kiln dried wood unless it is left in for longer periods. Heat treated firewood is meant to kill off insects and invasive species, but just because it is heat treated does not necessarily mean it is to the moisture levels of kiln dried firewood.
Whatever kind or volumes of firewood you may be looking for, Carver Firewood will be able to accommodate.
